Kolarek was born in Baltimore, Maryland and attended Catonsville High School. He later attended University of Maryland, where he played from 2008 to 2010. In 2008, he was 2-1 with a 4.26 ERA in 21 appearances. In 2009, he was 2-1 with a 4.68 ERA in 26 games and in 2010, he was 1-4 with a 6.06 ERA in 13 games (five starts). Ranked as one of the top 50 lefthanders in the country, Kolarek was drafted by the Mets in the 11th round of the 2010 Major League Baseball draft, ahead of future major league All-Star outfielder Joc Pederson.\n', '
