Wirtz was born on January 23, 1901 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Leona and Fredrick Wirtz. His father was a police officer. In 1922, he graduated from the University of Michigan.\n', '
After school, he worked as a commercial leasing broker with fellow graduate Arthur Rubloff. In 1929, he partnered with grain trader and real estate investor, James E.
