He signed with the New York Yankees in 1943, and after one season with the Wellsville Yankees, he took 1944 and 1945 off to serve in World War II as part of the United States Marine Corps. After returning from the war, he spent five more seasons in the minors for the Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers.\n', '
