Hawpe attended Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He was a member of the LSU Tigers baseball team that won the 2000 College World Series.\n', '

Hawpe was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 46th round of the 1997 Major League Baseball Draft; however, he did not sign. Hawpe re-entered the MLB draft in 2000, where he was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 11th round; he subsequently signed with the team in June of that year.\n', '
