Jackson attended Miramonte High School. He then enrolled at the University of California, Berkeley, where he played college baseball for the California Golden Bears baseball team in the Pacific-10 Conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association\'s (NCAA) Division I. In the summer of 2008, Jackson played collegiate summer baseball for the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod Baseball League. Baseball America rated Jackson as the eighth best prospect in the league.
