Anderson attended S. H. Rider High School in Wichita Falls, Texas, graduating in 2006. He then enrolled at North Central Texas College, and transferred to the University of Oklahoma. He was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 42nd round of the 2006 MLB Draft and the 40th round of the 2007 MLB Draft but did not sign. Anderson was called up to the major leagues for the first time on May 6, 2014. He made his major league debut five days later, allowing one earned run on two hits in ​5 1⁄3 innings of work, picking up the win. Anderson became the first big leaguer since Jered Weaver in 2006 to win each of his first five big league starts.
