Tropp played three seasons (2007–10) of college ice hockey at Michigan State University with the Michigan State Spartans in the CCHA at the NCAA Division I level. Tropp\'s MSU career was marred by controversy in 2009 when he and teammate Andrew Conboy brutally attacked Michigan Wolverines defenseman Steve Kampfer in an on-ice incident where Conboy appeared to check Kampfer from behind and Tropp appeared to slash Kampfer in the neck.
