After playing at Barstow College, Norman was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 15th round of the 1974 amateur draft. He was the 357th overall selection.\n', '
After signing with the Reds, Norman joined the Billings Mustangs of the Pioneer League, the Reds\' rookie league affiliate. One of his teammates on the Mustangs was the Reds 5th round draft choice, left fielder Steve Henderson, whose career often intersected Norman\'s.
