Farley has coached at Williams College since 1972. From 1972 to 1987, he was head coach of the track and field team. In 1987, he gave up these duties to become head coach of the football team, a post he held for 17 years before moving back to coaching track and field full-time. During that span, he recorded a career record of 114–19–3 (.849) that ranks as the eight best in college football history.
