Dishman was signed as an undrafted free agent by the San Diego Padres on May 23, 1993 and reported to their Class-A minor league affiliate at Spokane for the 1993 season. He compiled a record of 6–3, 2.20 ERA in 12 starts (with 2 complete game shut outs) that season and was selected as a "Short Season A All-Star" and a Northwest League All-Star.
