After being drafted in the eighth round, 207th overall in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft by the Boston Bruins, Gill spent four years playing for Providence College. He entered the NHL during the 1997–98 NHL season and played over 600 regular season games over eight seasons with the Bruins. On July 1, 2006, the Toronto Maple Leafs signed Gill to a three-year deal. He had some of the best numbers of his career in Toronto while working on discipline and lowering his penalty minutes.
