He was in his eighth year in the Phillies\' farm system when he received his first MLB opportunity in the midst of the 1954 season. After going hitless in his first four at bats as a pinch hitter and substitute third baseman, he started his first Major League game on July 11, 1954, against the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field. Command proceeded to belt Erskine\'s offering for a grand slam home run to tie the game at seven; it was his first hit and only homer in the Majors. In his next two starts, the second game of that July 11 doubleheader and on July 15 against the Cincinnati Redlegs at Crosley Field, Command would collect three more hits (including a double) and two more runs batted in — and that three-game flurry accounted for his entire Major League production.
