Prendergast started his professional career at the age of 18, in the Pennsylvania State Association. He bounced around the minor leagues for a few years before pitching 1939–1941 in Southern Association. He spent the following four years serving in the United States Army.\n', '
Prendergast returned to baseball in 1946 with the Syracuse Chiefs of the International League; in 1947, he had the best season of his career, going 20–15 with a 3.08 earned run average.
