Judge, who batted and threw left-handed, was born in Brooklyn, New York City, and grew up on New York\'s Upper East Side near 66th Street and 1st Avenue on what is now the site of Rockefeller University. He was noticed as a 12-year-old shortstop by a local postman, Bud Hannah, who bought him a first baseman\'s glove so that he could play at a more natural position. After playing semipro ball in the New York area and having a tryout with the New York Giants in 1911, he signed with the Boston Red Sox in 1914.
