Kraemer was drafted three times. First, by the New York Mets in the second round of the 1983 amateur entry draft. He did not sign. He was then drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the sixth round of the 1984 amateur entry draft. Again, he did not sign. The third and final time he was drafted was in 1985, by the Chicago Cubs in the 16th round of the amateur entry draft.\n', '
He began his professional career in 1985 with the Wytheville Cubs. In 22 games, he went 4–2 with a 3.35 ERA and 52 strikeouts in 452⁄3 innings of work. His control was suspect, as he walked 36 batters, or about seven per nine innings.\n', '
