The 6-foot 9-inch, 247-pound (2.06 m, 112 kg) Reid was born and raised in Virginia Beach. His father, Herman Reid Sr., was a football player in the 1960s with the Baltimore Colts. JR played football himself in his early years as a defensive player ("I love to hit. I love the contact.
