Valdez played mainly as a shortstop from 1980 through 1983 for the Boston Red Sox. He was also used as a second baseman and designated hitter by the Red Sox. On May 6, 1983 Valdez was arrested by Boston police while in the dugout during a game. He was charged with statutory rape. The charges were dismissed in July of that year after a grand jury refused to return an indictment.\n', '

Following his arrest, Valdez was suspended with pay by the Red Sox and later designated for assignment. He played for Boston\'s Double-A and Triple-A baseball affiliates through the end of 1984. From 1985 through 1988, he played at multiple levels of minor league baseball for the Chicago Cubs organization.\n', '
