He played his first junior game with the Petes against the Belleville Bulls on September 18, 1997, as he was held to no points in a 4–2 victory. On September 25, Foster scored his first career OHL goal against Curtis Cruickshank of the Kingston Frontenacs in a 8–5 loss. In 39 games with the Petes during his rookie season in the 1997–98 season, Foster scored 1 goal and 2 points in 39 games. In four playoff games, Foster was held to no points.\n', '
