Gubicza was born August 14, 1962 in Philadelphia. He attended the William Penn Charter School. He was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 2nd round of the 1981 Amateur Draft, the 34th overall pick. He began his professional baseball career at age 18 with the Royals Gold in the Gulf Coast League, where he went 8-1 with a 2.25 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 56 innings. He played for Fort Myers in the Florida State Class A League in 1982 and missed most of the season due to injuries.
