As a youth, Hanzal played in the 2001 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with a team from Chomutov.\n', '
Hanzal was the Phoenix Coyotes\' first round draft pick, 17th overall, in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft from hometown team HC České Budějovice. He then moved to North America to play for the Omaha Lancers of the United States Hockey League (USHL) in the 2005–06 season.
