While born in Stockholm, he was raised in Enköping, roughly 78 km west of his birthplace.[citation needed] Hävelid began his hockey career playing locally around his home of Enköping in Division 1 of the SIHA. After two seasons with the Enköping he played with the Arlanda Wings for the 1990–1991 season. The following year, he moved to AIK, a team based in Stockholm.
