Romero was originally signed by the Cleveland Indians as an amateur free agent in 2002. Three years later, he officially joined the Indians organization and played for the rookie-level Burlington Indians. Over the next four seasons, Romero played for the Lake County Captains, Kinston Indians, Akron Aeros, and Columbus Clippers.
