Stanicek is an alumnus of Rich East High School in Park Forest, Illinois and Stanford University. He was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles on June 4, 1984 in the 13th round of the 1984 amateur draft, but did not sign with the team. On June 3, 1985, he was re-drafted by the Orioles in the ninth round of the 1985 amateur draft and signed with them.
