After playing his junior hockey with the Kamloops Chiefs, Flockhart was selected 44th overall in the 1976 NHL Amateur Draft by the Vancouver Canucks. He had a solid first professional season in 1976–77, scoring 54 points in the minors for the Tulsa Oilers, and earning a five-game stint in Vancouver. He would spend three seasons in Vancouver\'s organization, scoring well in minor-pro but struggling to produce when called up to the parent club.
