Byram made his professional debut with the Indianapolis Ice in 1988. In 1991, he made his NHL debut with the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League. Byram played four games with the Islanders in his rookie season, accumlating 14 penalty minutes. On August 15, 1991, Bryam and the Chicago Blackhawks agreed to a one-year deal.
