Vasil Levski (Bulgarian: ΠΠ°ΡΠΈΠ» ΠΠ΅Π²ΡΠΊΠΈ, spelled in old Bulgarian orthography as ΠΠ°ΡΠΈΠ»Ρ ΠΡΠ²ΡΠΊΡΠΉ, pronounced [vΙΛsiΙ« ΛlΙfski]), born Vasil Ivanov Kunchev (ΠΠ°ΡΠΈΠ» ΠΠ²Π°Π½ΠΎΠ² ΠΡΠ½ΡΠ΅Π²; 18 July 1837 β 18 February 1873), was aΒ Bulgarian revolutionary who is, today, a national hero of Bulgaria. Dubbed the Apostle of Freedom, Levski ideologised and strategised a revolutionary movement to liberate Bulgaria from Ottoman rule. Levski founded the Internal Revolutionary Organisation, and sought to foment a nationwide uprising through a network of secret regional committees.
