Guidry won the AL Cy Young Award in 1978 as the best pitcher in the AL. He also won five Gold Glove Awards, given for superior fielding, and appeared in four All-Star games. Guidry served as captain of the Yankees from 1986 through 1988, while his uniform number has been retired by the Yankees.\n', '
Guidry was born in Lafayette, Louisiana where he attended University of Southwestern Louisiana. He was a combined 12β5 with a 2.03 earned run average (ERA) and 137 strikeouts as a two-year letterman with the Ragin\' Cajuns baseball team in 1969 and 1970. He was selected in the third round (67th overall) by the Yankees in the 1971 MLB draft. He began his career pitching briefly in the 1975 and 1976 seasons after 4 years in the minors. He was nearly sent to the Baltimore Orioles as part of a five-for-five MLB trade deadline deal on June 15, 1976, but the Yankees didn\'t want to give up any more left-handed pitchers beyond the three (Scott McGregor, Tippy Martinez and Rudy May) upon which the two teams had already agreed.\n', '
In 1977, he began as a relief pitcher but was moved into the starting rotation. He helped lead the New York Yankees to a World Series championship in 1977 and 1978. In those two years combined, Guidry went 4-0 in the postseason with 3 complete games in 5 starts, allowing only nine earned runs in 37β1β3 innings pitched.\n', '
